彩涂板的“涂”就是用特殊手段在基板上涂上一层液态涂料，经后续程序成为涂层产品。如涂层板就是在连续机组上以冷轧板、热镀锌板、镀铝板、高铝合金板、不锈钢板等为基板，经过表面预处理（脱脂和化学处理），用辊涂的方法涂上一层或多层液态涂料，经过烘烤和冷却所得到的板材极为涂层钢板。由于涂层可以有各种不同的颜色，习惯上把涂层钢板叫做彩色涂层钢板即彩涂板；又由于它是在冶金工厂完成表面涂层的卷材，可供用户直接加工成产品，所以也称预涂层钢板。
